One of the key elements of 3d printing is slicing everything up into very thin layers, sometimes down to a 10th of a milimeter. These slices are then printed with a 220 degree hot nozzle that produces 0,4 milimeter strong saussages of hot plastic.
In this sense the image was created as an analogy of 3D printing.
